Third layer of color .....Will this ever end?

Here is the 4th and final layer... I was soooooo glad to complete this and I now have this method completely out of my system... It is wet on wet for me from now on.... no doubt about it!  I have been ask about the final painting so here it is.  3/10/13.... I actually complete it in January.

This is the third layer of color.... all in all I am pleased with how it is going... but I am tired of this painting.... I do see a difference with each layer added but I still am pondering when will it end... I mean can you put too much color on a painting... and how do you know when enough is enough... if I add more and it is too much then is it ruined? I am happy to have learned a new method but I don't think this one is for me.... back to my basic " paint what I see" method.
oh... by the way... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

  1. Interesting departure for you Shirley. It'll be fun watching how this goes along. I found out (in a roundabout way (bouncing around on FB links)) that you were doing this. I wish I could subscribe to your blog to be notified when you post, but your subscription widget appears to be broken, at least for me anyway. Anybody else report that to you yet?

  2. No Kirk not heard that from anyone... maybe you are the only one attempting to follow! Not sure how to fix it .. or if I can... Just pop in every now and then to see whats going on.
Yes this a certainly a departure for me... actually the exact opposite of the way I have always worked. We shall see......

  3. Hello! My name is Alex and I'm extremely new to oil painting but this is a method that I'm looking foward to trying. I do hear that this type of painting takes a long time to complete and I wanted to ask you how long do you have to wait between coats and is there a way to speed up the process without affecting the paint film.

    1. Hey there Alex... I too had always wanted to try this method... doing it made me realize that wet on wet is the method for me.... it was not so much the length of time it takes to complete... but going over the same areas repeatedly was something I did not enjoy.
Drying time between layers was 2 to 3 days. I also think I could get the same look using wet on wet method. I would do a painting of this image using wet on wet to compare... but I am tired of looking at it! But that is just my personal preference to paint wet on wet. I encourage you to experiment and find out what suits you.... see you on the forum!
